PROTON achieved a historic milestone in August, recording the highest monthly domestic sales volume in the company's history. Total Group sales reached 22,632 units, PROTON's best overall monthly performance since January 2010. The breakthrough was supported by strong demand for the company's popular ICE offerings, another record-setting month for Proton e.MAS and overseas sales that pushed year-to-date (YTD) export volume beyond the full-year total for 2025 after just eight months.
Group sales for the national automaker in August reached 22,632 units (domestic, export, Proton e.MAS and smart) during the month, an increase of 22.7% over July while cumulative sales for the first eight months of 2026 are now 141,421 units, boosting year-on-year growth to 40.2%. Based on forecast Total Industry Volume (TIV), PROTON is expected to achieve a market share of 27.9%, which raises its YTD market share figure to 25.6%.
Saga, X50 and X90 sales remain strong while Proton S70 passes 3,000 units barrier for the very first time
PROTON’s C-segment sedan offering, the Proton S70 has seen an upturn in popularity since the introduction of the updated 2026 model in February, resulting in a new all-time volume high-point for the model last month. 3,235 units were delivered to Malaysian customers in August to bring the model’s YTD total to 17,953 units, placing it ahead of its total volume from 2025 with four months remaining this year.
Similarly, the company’s SUV models continue to lead their segments. The Proton X50 remains the B-segment SUV category YTD sales leader and Malaysia's best-selling SUV. A total of 2,274 units were sold in August to keep sales ahead of last year’s performance. Similarly, the Proton X90 remains the leader for seven-seater D-segment SUVs. Another 471 units were delivered in August, and though total sales is comparatively small, the model is now an impressive 64% ahead of its 2025 achievement.
While it no longer leads A-segment sedan sales in Malaysia, the Proton Saga remains a favourite with Proton fans, achieving an impressive 7,347 units in August. Its YTD number is now just shy of 60,000 units keeping it 33.3% ahead of last year and on target to exceeding an annual sales volume of 80,000 units.
Commenting on PROTON's overall sales performance in August, Dato' Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, PROTON, said: "By achieving the highest monthly domestic sales volume in PROTON's history, we have reached an important milestone that reflects the confidence customers place in our products and services. Our range continues to offer technology, design, quality, safety and performance, supported by a strong value proposition."
"At the same time, we are making strong gains in our export business, particularly in the area of assembling vehicles for our partner Geely, while on-going efforts by the Proton e.MAS team have resulted in the brand taking a dominant market share in the EV market and another record-setting month. As a result, PROTON is well-placed to reach its year-end volume and financial goals, benefitting the entire local automotive ecosystem as a whole."
Proton e.MAS sets another monthly volume record
Just one month removed from a record setting performance in July, sales of PROTON's range of electrified vehicles continued to climb in August. A total of 6,047 units were delivered last month, setting a new high mark for Proton e.MAS and moving the goal posts again for a pure xEV brand. Cumulatively, YTD sales now stand at 27,860 units, with all three models leading their respective segments.
The bulk of sales came from the Proton e.MAS 5 with Malaysia’s best-selling EV posting 4,818 units in August, setting a new national record for monthly volume from a single EV model. It’s C-segment SUV sibling, the Proton e.MAS 7, had 613 units sold while the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV reached 616 units as local assembly volume starts ramping up following the line-off ceremony by the MITI Minister in July.
"PRO-NET is humbled by the confidence Malaysians have in Proton e.MAS and our electrical mobility solutions, which is reflected in the continued high demand for all our models," said Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of PRO-NET.
"As we continue with efforts to deliver units as quickly as possible, our expansion into areas such as partnering charge point operators (CPO) to grow charging infrastructure, growing the dealership network and continuing to engage owners on multiple levels ensure we are able to offer a holistic ownership experience making the transition to xEVs a smooth one for all buyers."
2026 exports surpass full-year 2025 volume as supply to Geely export markets ramps upTotal export sales in August reached 2,477 units (Proton and Geely models), the highest monthly export volume since January 2011. This raised YTD export sales to 6,059 units, surpassing the 6,000 units exported for the whole of 2025 after just eight months. With more orders due for the rest of the year, export sales are expected to grow further in prominence.
“PROTON assembling vehicles in Malaysia for Geely markets is one of the key focus areas key to growing export sales. These activities boost assembly line utilisation at the factory while contributing to increased volume for PROTON’s vendors and contributing positively to Malaysia’s balance of trade,” said Abdul Rashid Musa.
